Neighborhood Spotlight: Hingham, MA

James Harrison

Rich in colonial history, Hingham became home to English settlers in 1633. Situated along the southwestern portion of Boston Harbor, this suburban town still boasts well-kept historic homes and landmarks tucked in between modern amenities. For singles, couples, and families, the classic colonial-style heritage of Hingham offers that friendly neighborhood environment we all long for.

History Overview

Hingham was originally called Bare Cove until 1635 when it was renamed after Hingham, England when the Reverend Peter Hobart and his supporters arrived and incorporated the town. From the moment English settlers arrived, they were welcomed by the Massachusetts Indians, as the tribe taught them how to grow food and later deeded the land to the settlers.

Being a seaside town, many residents worked in the fishing industry and Hingham became a vital port of entry in the U.S. Eventually, much of the harbor was claimed by the Navy to accommodate an ammunition depot and shipyard during the 20th century. These industries provided 24,000 people with jobs, creating tremendous growth.

Following the war, houses and schools were built to provide homes to service families. Ever since, quality living and environmental preservation have been a priority. Today, residents and visitors benefit from a strong infrastructure that offers an array of recreational waterside sites; bus and commuter boat transportation; and easy highway access to Boston.
